MAKI YAMAMOTO
The Maki Yamamoto Textile Studio is a modern atelier specializing in bespoke textiles. Rooted in the world of ancient Japanese art, the studio blends the magic of traditional craftsmanship with contemporary aesthetics, creating iconic pieces that lend urbane fashion to any interior.
Luxury fabric is Maki’s canvas. She skillfully embellishes textiles with painterly motifs and dressmaker details. Precise detailing produces a distinct design. Her artistic repertoire includes freehand painting, modern embroidery, hand-stitching, graphic contemporary appliqué, hand-drawn patterns, pleating, ruffles, fiber ties and twists ― assisting with the conceptual design of spaces and interior décor.
A lifetime of devotion to her craft has led to collaborations with top interior design firms like Peter Marino Architect, Brian J. McCarthy, and David Kleinberg Design Associates.
A seasoned traveler, she has journeyed to over 29 countries on her quest to unearth the finest materials and bring long-forgotten traditions to light, seeking design inspiration in the world’s most exotic places.
Tokyo to New York
Tokyo born and raised, Maki’s affinity for the arts began at an early age. Influenced by the warm characteristics and intricate beauty of traditional handcraft, she was enthused by the subtlety and adeptness it requires. Her passion for creating beautiful objects grew into a career.
She graduated from Bunka Fashion College, well-known for cultivating exceptional talent ― including Yoji Yamamoto and Kenzo Takeda. There she was recognized for her avant-garde approach by Issey Miyake, twice selected or a highly coveted fashion prize in a by nomination competition.
Later, she attended the National Academy of Fine Arts to perfect her printmaking skills. In 2003 she fused her love for art and fashion design with a flair for textiles to found what would become her internationally celebrated brand in New York.
